An article of mine on responsible tourism in Peru is in the Nov./Dec. issue of Transitions Abroad: Saving Machu Picchu: Responsible Tourism is a 3-Way Deal . I think it’s quite good and the pics are cool. Go read it.
As it so happens, Planeta.com is running a big online tourism conference on this very subject. It’s kind of an insider’s thing, with paid registrants, but results of discussions and some action steps will be posted afterwards. If you are inclined to care where your tourism dollars go and what they accomplish, swing by Planeta sometime and park for a while.
If you are in a business or agency that’s involved with this, or you’re just interested, you might want to check out details of a physical conference on the subject coming up in Baltimore in February. Click here for the Responsible Travel Forum . There’s a rumor I’ll be there and Pico Iyer is speaking!
But back to the Transitions Abroad issue. Some of the articles are posted on line, others you’ll have to subscribe (which you should) or plunk down some money at a newsstand to see. There’s a great end piece by Rob Sangster, author of Traveler’s Tool Kit, called “Synthetic Travel.” Also articles about working in West Africa, Thailand, Germany, and American EcoLodges. And as always, lots of great resources for independent travelers.
