Southeast Asia is home to a lot of different cultures and amazing landscapes — it’s not surprising to find that this region is a popular travel destination. But apart from these features, it is no secret that travelling around the countries in SEA is cheaper and this is why it’s a paradise for backpackers.

Singapore definitely doesn’t fall short in culture, food, and attractions but it’s not very friendly to budget travellers.

Skip Sentosa Island

I know that sounded a bit too harsh. Sentosa Island , after all, is where all the tourists go. Who doesn’t want to get on a 3D Transformers ride at the Universal Studios ? Or experience the wonderful aquatic environment at the Underwater World ? I’m sure we all do, but if you’re keen on saving your money for other things (like food!), skip it. It’s a tourist trap and a very expensive one.

Buses and Trains are Your Friends

Don’t take the cab unless you’re running late for your next flight. Public transportation in Singapore is very efficient and cheap. If you need help getting to places, you can get information on what bus/train to take using Google Maps!

Free Attractions

Walk around Singapore. It’s safe and clean and walking is a good way to appreciate the city.

Attractions like the National Museum of Singapore , Singapore Botanic Gardens , and the Supertree Grove (located inside Gardens by the Bay ) are great places to explore and admission to these is free.

You can also catch the sunset at the Changi Boardwalk and Marina Bay.

Hawker, Hawker, Hawker

Hawker centres, as you’ve probably heard from other travellers, are your go-to places if you want to experience the Singaporean cuisine all at the same time. Not only are the prices cheaper compared to restaurants, you will also find different kinds of food: Chinese, Malay, Indian, American, etc.

Stay at hostels

Hotels in Singapore are expensive. An affordable 3-star property in Singapore is around USD43 which is equivalent to a 4-star (or 5!) property in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. There are a handful of hostels in the city that are perfect for budget travellers. I stayed at the Shophouse Hostel along Arab Street.
