Top 10 Things To Do in Dublin

I spent a significant amount of time in Dublin, Ireland, last year. I was looking for work and in the meantime I explored the city and saw and visited pretty much every corner (and pub).

Dublin is Ireland’s capital city and is located at the mouth of the River Liffey, which cuts the city in half. The name is derived from the Gaelic name Dubh Linn, meaning ‘Black Pool’. The modern Gaelic name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath, which means ‘Town of the Hurdled Ford’. Dublin was founded by the Vikings and became the country capital after it gained independence from Great Britain in 1922. It is a city with a wealth of history and several cultural highlights. The nightlife isn’t bad either.

1 Guinness Storehouse

Guinness is pretty much the symbol of Ireland. In the Guinness Storehouse you can take a tour of the factory and see how the stuff is made. At the end of the tour you get the chance to pour your own pint of the black gold.

2 Jameson Distillery

“I spent all me money on whiskey and beer.” When you think about Ireland, you think about whiskey. When you think about whiskey, you think about Jameson. This is the place where they make it. Again, you can have a taste at the end of a tour.

3 Trinity College

You can visit this beautiful university and walk around the grounds. Absolutely make sure to go inside the library and see the Book of Kells.

4 Chester Beatty Library

This is another fantastic library in Dublin. You can see and learn about the history of literature from all around the world. It was one of my favorite places in the city.

5 Kilmainham Gaol

A tour of this old prison – it’s a museum now – gives you an idea of how Ireland became an independent country and of the struggles that preceded it. Many of the fighters for independence were imprisoned and even executed there.

These three brilliant museums are free to visit. There is the Museum of Archaeology, Museum of Natural History and Museum of Decorative Arts & History. They are located in different parts of the city and absolutely and totally worth a visit.

7 Parks and Gardens

Dublin has its share of great public parks. The most popular one is St Stephen’s Green, at the end of Grafton Street. Other fine parks are Merrion Square, the Botanic Gardens and Phoenix Park, which is the largest urban park in Europe.

8 Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle is located in the heart of the city. You can take a guided tour of this gorgeous building and learn more about the city’s and the castle’s fascinating history.
