We had every intention of writing about Petra by Day today, but Dave is putting the finishing touches on his photos as we speak. Not one to miss a deadline, I thought that I would share a few things with you today in place of our previously scheduled blog.
Every once in a while, we are sent requests to answer interview questions about ourselves. We love doing these because it gives us a chance to think about our lives a little bit and think about our history and our reasons for traveling.
People know quite a bit about our travel habits and lifestyle but nobody knows much about us as people.
So, here are a few things you may not have known about Dave and Deb.
Dave and I Met at a Bar – Yes, we’re that cliche. It was 1991. We had the same cowboy boots and we were watching a Blue Rodeo Cover Band. My roommate Melissa pointed out our similar taste in boots and the rest is history.
Years Together – 20.
Years Married – 14.
Family – Dave has one sister. Deb has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Dave’s the oldest, I’m the youngest. Both our parents are still happily married, retired and living the good life. We have several nephews and a niece and my first nephew just bought his own home – they grow up so fast.
Dave is afraid of Ants – Dave was swarmed in Honduras once by thousands of fire ants. When helping people take their packs off the roof of our bus, he set his pack right on a fire ant hill. When he put it on, it was covered in ants. Within seconds his white shirt turned black as he jumped around yelping from the pain. A quick thinking backpacker pulled out some surgical gloves (where they came from I’ll never know) and swatted away the ants. Now he has a phobia of them. If there are ants in our room, he can’t sleep. This can be difficult when traveling in tropical countries.
Deb is afraid of the Water – We used to scuba dive and I had hyperthyroidism while I was taking my dive masters in Central America. I didn’t know it at the time and couldn’t understand why I started to have panic dives. When I returned home to Canada and was diagnosed, it all became clear. I haven’t dove since and every time I get in the water I have a sense memory of those panic dives and freak out. It makes all those white water rafting, swimming with dolphins and snorkelling trips interesting to say the least.
Dave used to be a Rigging Gaffer for Feature Films – Dave has worked on feature films such as The Hulk, X Men, Chicago and Silent Hill. Here is his film Resume on IMDB.com
We Had Two Cats – Louie and Spoofy and whenever we travelled our first order of priority was always to find a good place for them to stay while we were gone. They were spoiled rotten and Spoofy lived to the ripe old age of 16. Louie was a fighter and disappeared one day. We found him in a parking lot so we were happy that we extended his life for a few years.
Before Traveling Professionally – We wanted to be adventure racers. We thought that would be there ticket to full time travel. That or becoming Dive Masters to lead dives around the world.
Dave used to be a drummer – We both wanted to be professional musicians and Dave was in a Rock band in Vancouver. He still air drums to the point of driving me crazy. When we are on a long road trip, we will put on his iPhone and air drum away to whatever is playing. Most of the time it is Metallica. We have had some pretty heated arguments over his air drumming. For me, it’s like nails on a chalkboard when he air drums for 6 hours solid during a long bus ride.
Deb used to be a professional singer – Deb used to sing on a cruise ship in Guam, in a club in Japan, in hotels and amusement Parks throughout Canada and the United States. She was also a Madonna Impersonator during Madonna’s Vogue Days when she had the ponytail and cone bras.
Deb has no technical skills – It is amazing to me that I have become a travel blogger and the computer is my living. When we got our computer way back, I used to call Dave every day at work to freak out about how I messed something up on our Compac Presario or later our iMac (you know that cool blue ones.) If he was home, I’d have him there to fix it, but it things always seemed to go wrong when I was on my own. This went on for years. I never got the hang of the computer. I was good at solitaire. Now I do the same thing when it comes to the blog. He can show me something a dozen times but I never get it right and I freak out when something goes wrong.
Dave speaks through Deb – Dave has a habit of speaking through Deb from anything to ordering a coffee at Tim Hortons to asking about a historical fact at a tourist site. He tends to ask Deb and then have Deb either order for him or ask the question for him. It used to be an annoying habit, now it is just plain funny and we laugh about it. Now Dave goes, why am I asking you that? I say, I don’t know, but then I go ahead and ask for him anyway.
Deb is the Champion of the 2008 Tour d’Afrique, – The World’s Longest Cycling Race at 12,000 km in Africa.
Dave Won EFI – Every “Fabulous” Inch of cycling that continent.
We Both Love Movies – We are both movie buffs. Arthouse films, action movies, dramas and romantic comedies. We both love them all and every chance we get, we go to see one. When we’re somewhere like Bangkok, the first things we do is beeline to the theater to see what’s playing. We love talking movies, we love seeing movies, we love movie reviews, trailers and news.
Dave once had a beer with the Rolling Stones
Deb once went to a Movie with Robin Williams.
So there’s a little bit about us. Is there anything else you’d like to know? We’re an open book.
