It was New Year’s Day and I was in Bangkok with my friends Chris, Jon and Mona. After our wild New Year’s Eve celebration the night before, we were taking it easy, grabbing some food on our favorite street corner.
And then this guy sat down next to us.
It was Bradley Cooper’s double. Clearly, it wasn’t the actual man, but it was far more than a passing resemblance. It was uncanny.
Ever since Bradley Cooper walked out wearing his black suit in The Hangover, I have harbored an unhealthy obsession with that man — his golden hair, his bright blue eyes, his oh-my-god-just-take-your-shirt-off-already chest.
So I wasn’t going to miss a chance to get to talk to this guy.
“Hi,” I said in my suavest voice. “Where are you from?”
“I’m from Holland,” he replied.
“Spending much time in Bangkok?”
“A few days, then down to Koh Tao. My friend arrives tonight.”
His friend. Could this be a female friend?
Thankfully, at that point, my dining companions joined in the conversation as I sat in the corner, a stupid grin on my face. Sometimes when I come face to face with an exceptionally good-looking guy, I can’t stop giggling. This was one of those times.
I had to be strategic.
I waited until the opportune moment, a conversation about Bangkok’s insane nightlife scene, to toss in the perfect offhand comment.
“Yeah, the nightlife is pretty crazy here. No wonder they’re filming The Hangover sequel in Bangkok.”
I paused and frowned slightly as I looked at the guy.
“You know — has anyone told you that you look like Bradley Cooper?”
My friends exploded into laughter. Turns out I was the furthest thing from suave — I was a fangirl mooning over this guy in the middle of a street cart restaurant!
The guy smiled weakly. “Yes, but I don’t think so.”
“Oh, but you so do!” I burst out, any trace of my being cool washed down the drain. “You have the same curly hair like, him, the same coloring, the same eyes.”
Once I saw Chris wince, I knew it was time to just stop talking.
“Well, that’s cool,” I said casually and turned away, my cheeks burning.
My friends made fun of me for the rest of the night. And the next night. And while we didn’t get the Bradley Cooper Lookalike to come with us on our Thai party train to Vang Vieng , we did meet someone else at that same table: Anthony, who joined us for the next few weeks and became a dear friend of ours.
A fair trade-off? Indeed.
