Recoleta Cemetery is the most popular tourist attraction in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and it’s not hard to see why.
Recoleta’s gorgeous tombs make it a photographer’s dream. And if you’re not a photographer, you will become one instantly! This place is inspirational.
Recoleta is the most exclusive cemetery in Argentina. Anybody who’s anybody is buried here, from politicians and artists to members of elite families, especially the Alvears. Half of the Recoleta neighborhood is named after the Alvears!
The most famous tomb there, of course, is that of Eva Peron. She is buried in the Duarte family tomb.
When visiting the cemetery, be sure to protect your skin. Even if you rarely burn, like I do, being surrounded by marble will hit you with double the UV rays. Sunscreen is not an option here!
I stood and pondered this one for a while. It seems allegorical — does it represent the triumph of faith over reason, or justice above all else?
This tomb was built for a little girl. So sad.
The poem left by her father will break your heart. Why, why, why? he cries.
Angel watching over the dead.
Recoleta Cemetery is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Pueyreddon stop on the subte’s D line. Take in the sights of Barrio Norte on the way! (Also, be careful, because this is where I was pickpocketed.)
Entry is free, though you’ll find people selling maps. Honestly, you don’t need them — just follow the crowds to find Evita! There are also free English-language tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 AM.
This is the most spellbinding attraction in Buenos Aires. Be sure not to miss it.
