Honduras is one of The World’s Cheapest Destinations , with cheap travel awaiting budget backpackers, adventure seekers, and divers looking for the most scuba time for their dollar.
Roatan may be on its way to becoming another lame cruise ship port , but for now it’s still a Caribbean diving deal and Utila is even better for the bargains. The interior of Honduras is pretty much off the radar completely when it comes to the glossy travel mags, so you can still feel like an explorer there. In researching the upcoming book, Traveler’s Tool Kit: Mexico and Central America (Feb. ’08), I found a few standout websites that will make your trip planning easier.
Honduras Tips has extensive information on all areas of the country, with thorough hotel listings, including prices, in English and Spanish. It also has the best bus route guide.
If you don’t need glasses now, you probably will after viewing Honduras.com , but it contains plenty of solid information on travel options, some current news, and the weather in Tegucigalpa, Santa Rosa de Copán, Roatán, and La Ceiba.
The Honduras Travel Guide is one traveler’s ad-free labor of love about Honduras, available as a downloadable PDF file as well. The official tourism site is Let’s Go Honduras .
About Utila , an official tourism site, tells you everything you need to know about the island, including all lodging options and registered dive shops.
Roatan OnLine overwhelms you with text, but it offers comprehensive links to hotels and dive shops and has good info on what to do in the area. Travel Roatan is an opinionated homespun site that also has good general information. Roantanet.com is a very commercial site that seems to be trying to break the record for the most keywords per page, but it does have some useful links. For somewhat timely news, see the site for the monthly newspaper Bay Islands Voice.
