What I loved most about my time in Emilia-Romagna is that we got to experience food on so many different levels. From gathering chestnuts and making pasta to dining on exquisite seafood and local delicacies, we got to enjoy food in so many different ways, short of actually
And part of that was eating a cheap local favorite — the piadina!
A piadina is a flatbread served in the Romagna, the southeastern region of Emilia-Romagna in Italy. They come in different varieties — some are quite thin, others are thick and chewy. My favorite piadina had just a hint of chewiness in between two crisply grilled sides.
We got to experience piadine as a meal while in Rimini at a restaurant called Nud’e’Crud . Nud’e’Crud is an award-winning piadineria that is very popular with locals; as far as I’m concerned, it deserves an award for its hilarious name as well!
We got our usual plate of local cured meats…
And our usual plate of fresh local cheeses…
And then, after grabbing a piadina and loading it up with freshly grilled vegetables, we turned them into sandwiches!
So simple, so fresh, and so delicious. Eating piadine in Emilia-Romagna is a great reminder that with great ingredients, meals can be simple.
We did get a bit fancy about dessert, however.
Squacquerone gelato topped with fresh figs, garnished with balsamic vinegar. (In other news, squacquerone — the ricotta-like cheese pictured above, a Romagnan specialty — is officially my new favorite Italian word ever!)
How much will going out for piadine set you back? At Nud’e’Crud, piadine and wine will run you under 10 Euros. Add dessert and caffe and it will cost you a bit more.
One of the reasons why I love eating in Italy is that the food is excellent at every level. You don’t lose a thing by going out for a cheap meal. And for that reason, piadine should definitely be on your list.
Many thanks to Emilia-Romagna Tourism and Wilde PR for hosting me on the Delicious Emilia-Romagna Blog Trip. All opinions, as always, are my own.
