And also… there are the rides, which can be enjoyed anytime, on two-wheels or four. Here are some of our favorite Black Hills rides and day trips (in no particular order) to get you started.
• The Northern Hills Canyon Exploration – This 143-mile loop connects a couple different stretches of road that have stood alone as favorites for decades. Highlights of this ride include: the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, three waterfalls (Bridal Veil, Roughlock, and Spearfish Falls), historic Deadwood, Vanocker Canyon, Boulder Canyon and of course, legendary Sturgis.
• The Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park Monuments Loop – 67 miles that show off just of the few iconic landmarks the Black Hills can boast of. Highlights include: two mountain carvings – Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park’s Wildlife Loop Road and all its wild inhabitants, the Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway, Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake and the pigtail bridges.
• The Badlands Loop – Looping from Wall this trek is 62 miles through some insane landscapes created from the starkest elements of nature. That starkness is definitely in contrast to the wooded forest and hills, streams and waterfalls found an hour or so west but it is what makes the Badlands so beautiful. Highlights include: Badlands State Scenic Byway, Wall Drug, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, Notch Trail and Castle Trail.
• The Devils Tower Close Encounters Loop – Sometimes forgotten in the shadows of the other monuments found in the Black Hills is the nation’s first national monument, not on this 121-mile loop from Spearfish (although the scenery on Hwy 34/24 will catch you by surprise). Highlights include: Devils Tower, the Geographic Center of the Nation in Belle Fourche, the historic Aladdin General Store, the Northeast Wyoming Welcome Center, Vore Buffalo Jump and the old Stone House Saloon (during the Rally only).
