Day of the Dead: Catrinas on the Loose

Day of the Dead celebrations are in full swing right now in Mexico. Tomorrow I’ll put up a slideshow with some crazy photos, but first here’s a video of Catrina figures in a fashion show.

The Catrina (or Katrina) figure is a key aspect of Dia de los Muertos. It was originally a parody of high society women—the walking dead—so you’ll see a few of those types in the video. But the idea has branched off into several other comical directions. One of them featured in the fashion show here was the combination of Catrina, Day of the Dead, and the Mexican Revolution in 1910. Check out the dead babes with bullets!

This was a free event in Guanajuato (with food even—pan de muertos). We found out it about by luck the day before. It was in the local (Spanish) newspaper, which goes to show you it pays to turn off the gadgets and keep your eye on what the locals are turning to for information.
